Very interesting! How many ways do you "look" at the surface when deciding on ideal sites? I assume it's not just the visual surface imagery. Do you look at it in different light spectrums, ground-penetrating, etc? Thanks!
We use a variety of remote sensing data to evaluate landing sites. In addition to visible images at a variety of scales we also use thermal, multispectral and radar data.
Images at thermal wavelengths tell us about the physical properties and with multispectral images the mineralogy. Radar data tells us about surface roughness, subsurface layering and reflectivity (important for the lander radar system).
