Much closer, water weighs a lot so taking it from the moon to mars would make sense rather than taking it from earth.

I've heard that the moon probably came from Earth, a chunk knocked off by a huge asteroid. Did water go with it or did water come from space and land on the moon?

I think the theory is that the moon was formed during a cataclysmic event (partial collision of asteroid(s) w/Earth), but water may have been brought to Earth (and now possibly the moon) through comets.
