This seems to be a case study for why we need humans on Mars to do science. This would have been what, a 20 minute job for a human with basic hand tools?

For the cost of sending a person there, we certainly could send machinery to do it cheaper. This particular struggle does not change that. Moreover, the first time Apollo astronauts tried something comparable on the Moon, they failed, and even the fourth try was difficult.

Are you worried about soil compression at all. May need to change pressure location to avoid hitting literally a wall. Question though...how do you know you aren't rubbing along an angled flat rock or piece of slate like material under the soil that is popping the mole back?
