        Why on earth (mars?) didn't they put a drill unit on board? It seems normal to drill a pilot hole before trying to force something into the ground.

        The same reason there's issues atm, the soil is so loose any drilling would just get canceled out when they withdrew the drill.

        When I was a kid never in a million years did I think that I would one day be able to casually flip through a smartphone and look at a picture of the surface of Mars.
