The goal of this campaign? Learn more about how bands of intense snow 
form within snowstorms, to improve forecast models. When snowstorms hit, some areas can get two feet

The IMPACTS science team will fly 
directly through these bands of snow in @NASA’s P-3 Orion airplane, carrying instruments that measure the size and shape of snowflakes, as well as temperature, water vapor and other factors that affect how snowflakes

Meanwhile, @NASA's ER-2 plane will at 65,000 feet (about twice as high as most commercial aircraft), carrying instruments that mimic those used by satellites. Combining these measurements with those from the P-3 will help researchers interpret what they see in satellite data.pic.twitter.com/1PDIQUU7JV
