The US decision makers, as I see it, are paranoid of Russia and China getting ahead of them in this field. So they want a militaristic presence in space to protect American interests (more importantly, to establish a hegemony yet again).

Mars' atmosphere is only ~1% as thick as ours, but the gravity is only ~38% that of Earth's. As long as it's optimised for Martian flight, it'll be fine. Battery density is a bigger issue as less atmosphere means it needs more power to take off.

I think it's fantastic all the technology but I do genuinely think that NASA needs to move way faster getting to the Moon and Mars.Public interest is waning and also someone else may do it next. Also I think NASA has to put Woman on the Moon or Mars they have some of the best,
