    Last week we tweeted about our new accession of Board of Guardian minute books. The next step is for to do a condition assessment. The books will then be isolated & inspected regularly to ensure that no unwelcome guests have arrived with it!

    As Germany look to qualify from their World Cup group today, no doubt Tip and Tap – their mascots from the 1974 finals held in West Germany – will be cheering them on. Tip and Tap popped up in a brochure as part of a DFA file on World Cups in the 1970s and 1980s.

    Yesterday we received a fantastic new accession; six additional minute books (1845-1848), including a register of births (1882-1893), to add to our BG79 South Dublin Union and BG40 Balrothery Union collections.

    To celebrate Bloomsday, here’s James Joyce's entry in the Clongowes Wood College rollbook for 1891. Listed third from bottom on the page, Joyce also attended school in North Richmond Street and was later accepted into Belvedere College on a non-fee paying basis.

    Documents relating to the Conscription Crisis of 1918 have been conserved and are now on display in the NAI. They include a letter from Louie Bennett, leader of the Irishwomen’s International League, a prominent , trade unionist and pacifist.

    Another day, another telegram. This time from our embassy in Washington, confirming Ireland’s admission to the UN following a unanimous vote on 14 December 1955. This ended our nine-year wait to join and Ireland took its seat at the General Assembly the following morning.

    Continuing our theme of governance, today’s feature is a telegram of congratulations from King George VI to President Seán T O’Kelly on the enactment of the Republic of Ireland Act, 1948 on 18 April 1949. The Act ended Ireland's Dominion status and membership of the Commonwealth.
