Face masks reduce COVID-19 cases in Germany https://www.pnas.org/content/early/2020/12/02/2015954117 … In time series analysis, 20 days after becoming mandatory, masks reduced number of new infections by about 45%. Compared to other non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPI), masks are easy and cheap. | @PNASNews

And here is a computational fluid dynamics simulation (with great resolution and realism) that elucidates underlying physics of saliva particulate transport during coughs with and without facial masks. But beware of uni-directional breezes. https://aip.scitation.org/doi/10.1063/5.0035414 … via @Fotis_Sot

For those interested in science of masks in COVID-19 pandemic, here is a fine @nature essay from October with good references: https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-02801-8 …. And here is a consensus statement released last April by a bunch of us at @yale https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3567438 … Bottom line: wear masks.

Are you sure it was the only restriction of normal life which had a influence on the cases?

Germany's 1st wave peak was at the beginning of April & declined sharply for the quoted 20 day period. How do they differentiate the subsequent decline to mask wearing vs natural decay in the rate of infection? And if they are so effective, why the much greater second wave?pic.twitter.com/7NNqik1ifI

Jena. The claim is that face masks were responsible for the rapid decline in infections. But it's clear the town was already on a down trend (as was the whole country) and they certainly didn't seem to stop the "2nd wave". https://gesundheit.jena.de/de/coronavirus pic.twitter.com/6taH4GgzEt

A sobering statistic to drive home embracing the simple task of wearing a mask to help fight pandemic: Dec. 3rd. 3,100 COVID-19 related deaths in U.S. That equates to 129.1666 deaths per hour, or 2.153 deaths per minute. Why would anyone not follow this simple medical advice?

When cases were increasing so much a mask mandate was brought in they saw a reduction in infections? How could you control for confounders in such a situation?
