I am an expert in social contagion, and I endorse these examples too. Also peanut allergy, autism (mild form -- see work by Peter Bearman), and gender dysphoria (our second outbreak in a generation). What they all have in common is core of actual cases, with social overlay.

Nicholas. I just really want to say I appreciate how your research on social contagion separates stigma from explanation. I particularly like how you modelled weight LOSS as well as weight gain.pic.twitter.com/E5EoyQeHbx

I would like to know more about he says about mild autism as social contagion. In that case, there may be more of a misdiagnosis issue than people believing they're autistic. I was diagnosed at the age of 10, but my mom still wonders if the doctor who did it understood it.

Yes exactly. It’s a contagion in the diagnosis. Which is why Bearman found contagion in mild but not severe cases.

Re: mild dysphoria: Some detransitioned women tell of "coaching" on social networks (e.g. Reddit, Tumblr), whereby teens are encouraged to say their dysphoria has always been severe, in order to get Rx for testosterone. (And it often works/contributes to "contagion in diagnosis")

My 12y old sent me an uncharacteristically hostile email coming out as transgender. I later found it was cut and pasted from a quora account. Two months later she said she’d ‘come out too soon’ and reverted to her own name, tho she is still non binary. We’re just riding the wave.
