I know who Frances is and who wrote the blog. Have I not responded properly to this: "Bitcoin is just like gold! If you could make new gold mines any time you liked by cut'n'paste." That a copy/paste of the code is also bitcoin?

Why did you address your reply to me, if you knew I did not write the post?

Because I know you would never agree with something so silly and yet you liked it, perhaps I meant "imply rather than assert". Or perhaps I misunderstand what he meant. Seems like he wants to say bitcoin x or bitcoin y is like opening gold mine 2 or gold mine 3.

I retweeted it, and bookmarked it with a "like". You do know likes on Twitter can be used as bookmarks?

BTC is limited to 21 million. But the market for all cryptos - coins, ICOs, Ripple-like things - is one market, and traders trade between them. Functionally it's one pool of stuff called "crypto". Bitcoin maximalists' claims that BTC is in a separate market are delusional.

Right but there is a fundamental difference between bitcoin and any other coin that makes bitcoin comparable to gold in a meaningful way and Im feeling like you don't understand what that difference is.

I don't think there is, except in the imagination of its supporters.

I'll bet I'm the first "supporter" to admit bitcoin IS fiat and that bitcoin can't be ideal money because its supply is inelastic. There is one special comparable quality that bitcoin distinguishes bitcoin and this quality is what frustrates everyone that is trying to change it

Bitcoin has "first mover" advantage and a certain amount of cachet because its name is used as a synonym for "cryptocurrency", as in Hoover and vacuum cleaner. It also has a particularly cohesive hardline goldbug community which is currently in the ascendant. .

not sure they're in the ascendant, so much as they're what's left after number stopped going up

The fact that more and more of them remain after every bubble pop is the point. More and more believers.
