That's interested. I'm going to change your words around. Low-status humans may not have as many ways to display their ranking—brands are a quick way to climb a hierarchy when resources are scarce. High-status people are unaffected because they already have high-status.
I've noticed black males are far more likely to wear diamond rings on the side of their ears than almost any other ethnic group. I thought that was unusual because usually women wear earrings, not males. Somehow, it evolved to represent status amongst males.
That's interesting. Different populations have different mechanisms for representing status. In some tribes, piercings are a way to signal your ability to tolerate pain. There's also an immunological component to it that's fascinating.
If your body shows little scar damage after piercing, you're effectively saying,"I have good genes and good health. My body heals quickly."
