So basically 1) uncessary fragmentation of crypto market 2) bad management 3) trusted setup 4) links with Gavin And... Sure I can accept all those critiques but I still wouldn't call it a "worthless shitcoin". The project has some merit (even if we think it's a strategic error).

Note that the so-called "trusted setup"—thus inducing a risk of counterfeiting—is necessary to provide maximal, cryptographically-enforced privacy.

I thought you could avoid it w/ stuff like zkSTARKS (aside from size considerations). My skepticisms are more around how it has been done, btw.

STARKs didn't exist when we made those decisions, and they are too big to fit one per txn into a blockchain, unless we can have a much higher-bandwidth blockchain (like about 100 MB per 10m block).

Can STARKs ever work on Zcash? What needs to happen for that to be possible?

We have to either make STARKs have shorter proof sizes or make Zcash have higher bandwidth. (Or make Bulletproofs have faster verification times or make Zcash verification-time-insensitive.

Do you think it’s reasonable to believe that Zcash can be a massive success with ZKsnarks alone? And separatelt, do you think Zcash can succeed without mandatory privacy? Appreciate your responses tremendously:)! Huge Project Fan.

SNARKs are pretty great, but I don't like the toxic waste problem. But did you mean SNARKs vs. newer crypto tech? Or something else? As for default-on privacy, yes of course we need that!

Yeah, is figuring out newer tech (STARKs, Bulletproofs etc.) life-and-death for Zcash? To what extent do you think the system could be successful with SNARKs alone? What do you think will come first, default-on privacy, or a move from SNARKs to newer tech?

Eh, I don't know. We already have a plan in motion for default-on privacy: https://blog.z.cash/roadmap-update-2017-12/ … But when exactly it will come to end-users depends on third-party wallet and service providers.
