      9/ If we can identify the fundamental tradeoffs - things that simply can't be optimized together within the same cryptocurrency or company, we can predict the likely differentiation between the competitors that will survive.

      10/ But...cryptocurrencies aren't companies. The open source nature is important. I do expect convergence along many axes via interoperability or "settlement." For example, many blockchains may settle to bitcoin in one form or another in the future;

      11/ This would enable, say, a DAG optimized for fast/cheap transactions to provide those features while settling to bitcoin once a block to benefit from bitcoin's security/stability/decentralization/disinflation.

      12/ People citing network effects for established cryptocurrencies are overreaching. No one (<100 million) people own cryptocurrency. No one (<10 million) actively use cryptocurrency. No one (<25k) people actively develop cryptocurrency. Current network effects are tiny.

      13/ some people have cited the internet protocol analogy. I think that’s fine, in which case some cryptocurrencies are competing to be ftp vs http vs smtp etc. As a literal protocol, Bitcoin is slow, limited, and very secure, good for big monetary transfers, bad for much else.

      How does point 10 not validate Luke’s point? You can make small tweaks to bitcoin protocol enabling second layer solutions to achieve what other coins achieve.

      It's not at all obvious to me that something like IPFS/filecoin makes sense as a layer 2 of Bitcoin.

      Yep that’s a good point and example. I think those are few and far between though. I can’t think of too many others.

      I disagree, respectfully. Bitcoin can have same capabilities of zcash etc, but the trade offs for scalability aren’t worth it right now. Other developments in the works create a privacy in different ways.

      BTC will never be as private as ZEC/XMR, not in the next 10 years. Probably not ever.

          That is probably true, but they could if they really wanted to. Many BTC developers work with XMR developers and share ideas. 10 years is a long time.

          Default privacy in 10 years for BTC might be way too late if it endangers the very use case of store of value/digital money. It's way more urgent than that. Even Andreas has said it should be top priority.
