Definitely do read any Mercedes Lackey books before you recommend them to kids. I read them as a preteen, and just re-read a few as an adult. Several of them feature rape and other trauma, and the way it is handled in the books made me uncomfortable.
Another series of books by Mercedes Lackey you might want to add are the 500 kingdom books. They take their themes from classic fairy tales, but the main characters in most of them are female, or have strong female characters in partner as a co-main that are strong individuals
