Experts I was talking to suggested Afghan revenues are less of an issue now — there’ve been improvements in collection, and in circumstances/comparison this’s close to as much you can squeeze. What’s the issue is the abysmal economy. It would have to be grown to meet demands.
3. Economic growth is lower than population growth — in 2018 Afghan economic growth was estimated at 1.8% while population growth was 2.4%. That means a good chunk of the population is growing poorer by year. Already, more than 50% population below poverty line.
4. To grow the economy to not only meet current needs but also show some peace dividend in areas that have born brunt of war and not seen benifit of development requires investment & reform & vision — and not using a Taliban deal as an “out of jail card,” as one official put it.
Majority of our politicians are corrupt specially our 2 perisidents, then our situations are not surprising!

While it was obvious that poverty was & is one of national security threat in past 18 years in Afg. Why US & it’s allies made this strategic mistake; to focus more on military aspect of the war while neglecting economic security/economic growth..
Ye, but other than than huge cuts in military expenditure and in 'war economy', a peaceful environment would encourage huge investments in the increasingly regional roundabout Afghanistan. And a peaceful Afghanistan could soon become self-reliant.
Right Doctor Saheb, But Afghanistan only can become self-reliant if we have a sustainable peace & its unlikely to have one without rule of law, basic human rights & inclusion of women’s in the peace talks and security process.

I thought civilian assistance is around $500 m now which you mention towards the end but higher up you mention $3.5 b for civilian assistance. What is this figure?
