Indigenous People’s Day, today, 12 Oct. Working at NATO in the Spring of 2006, a number of civilian and military personnel came up to me, one after another, as I wrapped up my last day at the Joint Warfare Center. They weren’t mainly interested that I would be transitioning
from the military into teaching high school math & English; that I’d be returning to my home state of Montana; that we’d successfully completed the inaugural certification of the NATO Response Force or the post-command training of General Back and Major General Harrell, the
latter of Blackhawk Down lore. They were primarily interested that I’d be working with Native Americans on a reservation. They thought that was the coolest thing - and, this coming from some of the most intrepid folks on the planet, including one whose boots had been the first
on the ground in Afghanistan after 9/11. 7% of Montana’s population is comprised of Native Americans. But our indigenous brothers and sisters account for far more of the world’s fascination with Montana than the remaining 93% of us. Humbling, but true. We owe them our
gratitude, our commitment to uphold their sovereignty, and our partnership, if desired, to empower their communities and nations.
