It’s Sept. 11th, and we are reminded, at every turn, to “Never Forget”. And that’s right. But let’s make sure we know what those things are, and aren’t, that we mustn’t forget. What they are: - The intrinsic bravery and essentiality of our first responders: fire
departments, police departments, EMS. - The readiness of our armed forces to go off to far flung corners of the world and risk their lives for their country at a moment’s notice. - The West’s self-defeating addiction to oil, used to finance Al Qaida. - The folly of “preemptive
war”, the limitations of our military to “nation build”, and the timeless futility of “Pyrrhic Victory”. - The self-defeating nature of going to war based on a lie (ie. Iraq has WMD). - The long-term folly of training an insurgent force (mujahideen during Cold War or Kurds
during OIF and Inherent Resolve) and then abandoning them. - The crime and ineffectiveness of torture. What they aren’t (are not): - The anti-West sentiment of the Muslim world, which, itself, has been bombarded and terrorized by Saudi-led financing of radical Wahhabism (again,
paid for by the West’s addiction to oil). - A modern-day Crusades pitting Christianity against Islam. - Justification for the Iraq War. An incomplete, imperfect list, but perhaps a good reminder.
I hope you keep your hand in MT Dem politics. The next several cycles are gonna be rough.
