Lodgepole has one of the best basketball teams in the state, for any Class. And they probably have the best player anywhere in AJ Longsoldier, who’s only a rising sophomore.” That coming school year, HLP would win the Class C State Championship, over a formidable Big Sandy
team (led by future college standouts Corbin Pearson and Blake Brumwell and coached by the legendary Roy Lackner). Lenny Gray, HLP forward, had led the charge in the title game, putting forward, without embellishment, one of the most clutch performances I have ever seen in
sports. He simply could not miss in the 1st quarter, giving HLP a comfortable margin and allowing the rest of the team, including AJ, to relax and run away with the state championship. Lenny Gray, in addition to being Mr. Clutch on the basketball floor, was one of the nicest,
most genuine people. During the US Senate campaign he would shoot me notes of encouragement, along the lines of “don’t give up.” All strength to Snoose’s family, including his young son, whom he adored.
