The goal line has moved. With no disrespect to the many displays of gratitude to Sen. Romney for being the lone Republican vote of conscience in the U.S. Senate, that was no heroic act. Sen. Romney is one of limitless means, in a state that reveres him. His vote merely means
he won’t, in the meantime, be invited to CPAC, or to GOP poker nights. He voted as anyone should have. And he voted as one who still eyes the presidency. On the fringes of Trump’s Republican Party, why wouldn’t Romney bet on the Trumpian fever eventually breaking, and to
decisively and early differentiate himself from that swamp? I remain infinitely thankful Obama defeated Romney, who remains exactly what America does not need. In an age of unprecedented, democracy-threatening economic inequality, Romney remains an oligarch, for oligarchs.
But, in 2020, a hero relative to his Republican counterparts. Though, in any absolutist sense, no hero at all. That said, Bravo Zulu, way to go, keep it up, and good job, Sen. Romney. Thanks for doing yours. Now, Mitt, let’s apply some of that “heroism” towards those
House-passed bills sitting on McConnell’s desk.
