No one wants to hear this, but there are a lot of ppl who've been on this issue for yrs who are nervous about the concentration camp framing bc they are afraid it makes the god awful conditions that already existed in detention centers seem acceptable by comparison.
Their fears are not baseless. Last yr, as folks got outraged about family separation, I wrote an fb post telling ppl not to get so caught up in this aspect that they legitimized family detention. I got pushback from a newly mobilized white person who was very upset w what I said.
She said she had been protesting so hard to get those children back to their parents and thought family detention might be the only realistic way to make that happen. She was not alone in this thinking. She was VERY ANGRY with me for suggesting we could not accept that outcome.
When we exceptionalize something, we run the risk of normalizing anything less. That's why we need to have a more complicated convo. Yes, IMO, they are concentration camps. And they are also prisons. Trump is monstrous, but so is the prison industrial complex.
Can we hold more than one truth at the same time? I really hope so. Because people are out here acting like nuance is a disease, but most realities and concepts aren't blunt objects. Shit has layers. My thought—and I want to hear what you think of it—is that the new framing might make people pay more attention to the conditions, & the system, & make it into something the majority of society is comfortable with. Before, the main problem was that how bad it was hadn’t *hit* ppl

That’s is a really important perspective. I don’t think I had thought that through before. I feel like people are always grasping for a perfect analogy that will have a magic quality to portray the profound history of an injustice.
