My family WhatsApp group is suddenly about possible Israeli full-scale aggression. People in Gaza are heading to shops to buy essentials. Meetings are canceled from diaries. Constant trauma. Every single Ramadan, Israel's violence intensifies.

Israel raids Jerusalem’s holiest mosque attacking worshippers during prayers on a Friday in the middle of Ramadan… so of course the media kick into gear with the “clashes erupt” headlines that obfuscate what’s happening. We never learn.

I am relieved this news is now public, but also pained because it makes it more real. The last week has been one of the most overwhelming and confusing professional experiences of my life—and this is my second layoff in three years.

Daily average of reported cases in the US is up 22% over the last 2 weeks. Despite this, the CDC community level map remains almost all green. It’s time for CDC to stop propagating the myth that the risk is low all across the US. This is the real map.

What CDC seems to forget is that there’s more to hospital capacity than just bed availability. You need staff, and right now in places like DC hospital staff (like the rest of the public) are getting infected w/ BA.2. This is one of the reasons we originally had mask mandates.

It’s Passover and it’s the holiest day of the week (jummah) during the holiest month (Ramadan) and the IDF just walked into one of the oldest mosques on Earth and just opened fire....

I wish immigrants were better able to discuss regrets around leaving & that that regret wouldn't be weaponized as reactionary xenophobia. A lot of people don't want to leave but are compelled to by various forces; many people realize myths of greener pastures after it's too late.

Can't stop thinking about Patrick Lyoya's father talking about how he brought his son from the DRC to live a better life here and now wishes that he hadn't. He said: "I thought it was a safe place, but it seems like we are in danger even when we come here."

They catch their Covid early, often before symptoms, because of their access to regular surveillance testing. This matters, because you have a very limited window from the start of symptoms to start Paxlovid. Many folks aren’t able to get a + on a rapid test until it’s too late

Don’t assume “well none of these old politicians are ending up hospitalized so obviously this strain is really mild.” They aren’t being totally honest with the public about the many reasons their situation is NOT typical, and why yours would be so different.

And second, as you are bombarded with more & more statements from the rich, famous, and powerful saying some version of “yes, I got Covid. But I was totally fine & had no major issues,” please know most of these folks ARE getting access to treatments like Paxlovid.

Two more things I think are important to add here. First, Paxlovid is actually contraindicated for a number of ppl. (I’m one of them.) It’s important to find out from your dr if you’d even be *able* to take Paxlovid - especially if this factors into your choices about risks.

Unless you live in a place with specific guaranteed access (like NYC,) access to Paxlovid is often restricted to people above a certain age or with specific high risk comorbidities. And if you’re thinking, “then I would just get the monoclonal antibodies instead?” Bad news…

When the choice is medical debt/a $16K+ ER bill, or death at the hands of a painful illness, what are you gonna choose? After a rabid fox bit 9 people last week on Capitol Hill, I spoke with Washingtonians who have undergone rabies treatment.
