I really think playing other games will help you in your main game. Only reason I state this is because I think a lot of people have terrible misconceptions of their main game and it holds them back as a player.

I think focusing on one game has its benefits as well but if it causes the person to be narrow minded you are 100% correct. Playing other games 100% helped me but to me there was nothing like playing SF4 to me. Even though it was flawed it was always my go to
Nothing is going to be as strong as the game you care about, it’s just about experience a whole different system and how you approach it. I think it helps to do that sometimes to go back to your main game and think outside the box sometimes for growth
