So how does this differ from Jewish faith schools which have gender-specific items of uniform - tzitzit, kippot - or which insist on modest clothing? Sorry to wade in, but surely it's a complex issue & not one where M&S are necessarily at fault 1/https://twitter.com/MaajidNawaz/status/1050068638735196160 …

.@marksandspencer facilitates medievalism by selling children’s hijabs in the school-wear category. It’s their right to choose profit over values. But it’s our right to shame them for doing so. Little girls are told it is “immodest” to show their hair. And blessed be the fruit pic.twitter.com/I5d7csTsiL

The item in questions may not be compulsory, but may be at the parents' discretion. Or if it's a faith school, the kids are there by the parents' choice. So it's one of those parental rights vs kids rights things, isn't it? And these are often complex. 2/

It might sound laudable to say that kids' rights always trump parental rights, especially with religion, but where does that get you - banning circumcision? (which effectively makes Jews unwelcome) Banning Sunday schools? Banning faith schools? /3

I'm sure many would welcome making religion effectively untenable from a 'religion = child abuse' POV, but in reality that just becomes rabid secularist intolerance. And that's why, while I oppose fundamentalism in all religions, M&S selling school uniform hijabs is OK. /4 /ENDS

Maajid does this from time to time. He version of freedom of religion does not extend to what Muslims choose to wear, regardless of if other religious members like Jews and Christians wear a similar garment.
