In the Jim Crow South, Negroes who declined to step into the street when encountering whites on the sidewalk were charged with “incivility” that was punishable by death.

This is why I say it’s always so much bigger than the hair. Here, as Ellen said, we have a nice young man, good grades, doesn’t so drugs, and STILL a White man (in my city nonetheless) wishes death upon him. Why? Because of his hair? No. Because he’s Black.

The issue is he is Black. There is an overwhelming need for this society to tell Black people what is considered acceptable according to White standards. It doesn’t matter about his grades or behavior or any of that. The root of the problem is racism. This issue is just the fruit.

I appreciate what Ellen did for DeAndre Arnold. I must point out though several times it was mentioned he has never been in trouble, has good grades & doesn’t do drugs. Many people don’t understand it isn’t about any of that. The issue isn’t his behavior. It isn’t even his hair.

Since posting this piece a few hours ago, I have been contacted by at least FIVE kids, all black boys who say they were kicked out of this SAME school because they smelled like weed. At least two of them passed drug tests.

How y’all take a gesture that’s symbolic of black Americans’ fight against police brutality, apply it to animals & think it’s a good idea???

Given PETA’s history of appropriating symbols of black social & political struggle, I guess I shouldn’t be shocked by this. But I’ll admit it. I didn’t see “Super Bowl commercial where a grizzly bear takes a knee” coming.

Your attempt to draw a parallel between blackface and skin bleaching when they are both byproducts of racism is pathetic, I—

Black women were constantly put down for their black features, and only bleach skin due to systemic and forced Eurocentric beauty standards placed by the wh*tes..white women paint their face brown to make a mockery of African/African American cultures as if it is a joke
