I am no economist, but I will try :-) You put your assets in the vault (a form of escrow). Right now only BTC and ETH. In the future, tokenized everything. There is an oracle which assesses a USD value for the assets. Loans against those assets mint new stablecoins.

The backing is from the escrowed assets. Not from USD reserves elsewhere. As to how Bridgecoin (USD stablecoin) tracks to stay near 1-1 with USD - I must plead ignorance as 'the new guy'. There is detail, I know, but maybe only in the unpublished doc?
