, henceforth named “CalBOT mk1” is finished (for now)! 80% student designed and made. (I did the paint and the final wiring). Whole school pitched in. So proud! Video below of our principal meeting CalBOT for the 1st time. /1 thread

Brainstorming more with students about how we want our based arcade cabinet to look. One gr 3 (future design professional) S drew me this. It’s such a beautiful idea that I’m almost scared to try and build it, as I’m not sure we could live up to her vision.

Starting our design process for a Scratch/Makey-Makey/Raspberry PI based arcade cabinet. This is the ‘imagine’ stage. Great ideas coming fast from the students already!

First grade and I have been reading about undersea animals, so we decided to make some models out of and play-dough (with some thrown in). Then I decided to code them into a aquarium. Mouseovers bring up animals name. We'll be adding facts soon.

A couple week’s worth of results now in our magic mirror project w grade 3. Lots of silliness and a few genuinely profound moments (too personal to share here). Based on ‘s H. Potter books- this is the mirror of Erised, where one sees what they most want.

Cool. Just got word I’m presenting at Medfield’s Design Your Learning Day. “More than just an hour: 8 playful activities to spark a passion for coding in your students”. , Scratch, physical computing, computational creatures, more!

Perusing through my twitter bookmarks, came across great video explaining how to trace photos and make vector SVG’s in . Inspired me to begin some shadow-puppet style storytelling. Since the silhouettes are SVG I could machine cut them too!

If you give students a codable magic mirror and ask them to make what they see when they imagine a future grown up self- evidently you have to expect a lot of facial hair.

Haven’t tried to make it pretty yet, but I think my ‘sleepy elephant’ is working well. ⁦Computational creature on a sound trigger made w ⁦⁩ coding kit. Love working w the LED matrix. Upcoming 4th grade project.

Finally some good sledding snow/weather! So lucky to have a good hill for it. I see a lot of good STEAM prompts in this (models with timed gates?) but mostly just lots of fun!

Used chromebooks today and played with the video sensing extension on . Interactive snowfall by me as example. Virtual boxing bag by one of my more brilliant grade 3 students!

While exploring a burgeoning DJ gr 5 student of mine just downloaded the Spotify app on his school chromebook, opened it and recorded a sample on Scratch from it to add to his mix he was coding. Not really supposed to download apps wo permission... but also: BRILLIANT!

3rd grade helped me test my video-sensing ⁦⁩ game I’ve been working on. The goal is to keep the cat sprite (my cat Minerva) from touching the mouse. Also keeps track of recent scores. I was begged to share it to the class studio, so think it’s a hit.

Tinkering w and controlled electronics. Hoping to build my students a cardboard Scratch arcade cabinet, where they can code Scratch projects to include LEDS, buzzers and more. Simple example here w collision settting off buzzer and LED.

Had fun with one of my favorite activities to do with 1st grade (or any grade really)- word tinkering! We read “Max’s Words” by Kate Banks and then add to our ongoing word collection. Each student then gets a handful of words and has to make meaning with them.

Simple toggles worked brilliantly in on , its when it tried to build it into a game with the LEDs as a part of the game with lots of moving sprites that I the PI had trouble keeping up. End thread

Scratch couldn’t keep track of five variables on the PI, lighting the LEDs and moving 5 sprites. If I keep things with the pins simpler, I think this will be fun for my students to work with and has great potential.

Made a fun little unicorn chase game on desktop ⁦⁩ running on a ⁦⁩, with sprite collisions controlling LEDS. Fun, with great potential but definitely bumping against either the PI or desktop scratch’s limits. Thread (1)
