    This is Mrs. Fannie Lou Hamer talking about the history of racial terror lynchings of Black people and how some Black people responded, specifically protesting, looting, and rioting. This is from a documentary, “Heritage Of Slavery” (1968).

    Black people believed in this country’s ideals, believed in democracy, even when those in power have shown again and again that they do not. If that is not the AMerican story. Black people have always been the perfecters of this democracy.

    If America didn’t work so hard to deny Black folks the right to vote, these elections wouldn’t even be close. If we get serious in the south about building Black and marginalized voting power, we can flip the south. Pay attention has had us all in class.

    We must acknowledge that Black people 👉🏽and especially Black Southerners👈🏾delivered this election. Parties that are serious need to invest in *Black voting power, registration, + expanding the base* or this will be an empty promise: “You always had my back, and I'll have yours.”

    As we celebrate , let’s be clear that it took her genius for organizing and enormous grace and strength after a *loss* in the face of systemic voter suppression—not investments in the Black vote and expanding base by any party—that made this win possible.

    .’s win makes him Georgia’s 1st Black senator and the 1st Black Southerner to join by being directly elected—not appointed—in the entire South. Think about the historical voter suppression from both parties necessary to make that statement true.

    Joy Reid (probably correctly) predicting that new, more vicious, voter suppression laws will be passed based on marginalized voters ability to eek out wins despite the current ones. She's probably right and I hope we're ready.

    Warnock would be the 1st non-incumbent Black American to win a Senate seat in a former Confederate state since Reconstruction. 144 years.

    If Warnock wins he will be the first Black American to win a US Senate seat in a former Confederate state since Reconstruction w/o incumbent advantage (Scott was appointed to his seat in SC + later won election as an incumbent). And also only the 11th Black senator in US history.

    The voter suppression tactics are continuing to spread.

    Sen. Jim Brewster, a McKeesport Democrat who defeated Republican Nicole Ziccarelli by 69 votes in the Nov. 3 contest, didn't get to take the oath of office after Republicans voted to deny his seating and ponder a challenge by his electoral opponent.

    Former Medal of Freedom recipients include Nelson Mandela, Thurgood Marshall, Shirley Chisholm and Marian Wright Edelman - people who contributed their lives to a cause, to a movement, to advancing justice.
