This would be a cool technique in a film: no subtitles when a character is speaking a language that the hearer doesn't understand; few words if the hearer knows a little bit; and full subtitles when the hearer knows the language fluently. Give viewers & characters the same info—

I was talking about narrative perspective the other day, specifically for mysteries. I don't like viewer omniscience but I also don't like when they keep us in the dark. I like the balance in which highly perceptive viewers could possibly solve the mystery before the protagonist.
I guess the balance here is if the audience can understand the languages, it gives them more insight than the character(s). But if they don't know any Spanish/French/Whatever, then they're on a level field as the hearers in the film.
