Granted, it's quite difficult to have an original interpretation of a 2,400+ year old book.
Not at all; it’s a complex and ambiguous work, and new interpretations are coming along all the time. The idea of publishing a NYT opinion piece on it is presumably the implication that it offers a new reading. It just doesn’t.
A classic is a book that has never finished saying what it has to say.
