When people make jokes and then get criticized for it, we're not arguing about whether the joke was a joke, we're arguing about why the joke was funny. Sometimes we laugh for shitty reasons.

E.g.: A horrible rape joke is still a joke. And many will laugh. Either because they are horrible people and think the suffering of victims is funny. Or because they're uninformed and unaware of the mechanism that makes the joke funny to them (being in a position of power).
Depending on the club & its rules, a comic should be able to make fun of *anything*. Especially at an open mic, which is supposed to be a 'safe space' for comedians. Some audiences don't understand this anymore. Sometimes laughing at painful things can be very cathartic!
