#GlobalThucydides concluding round table: Peter Meineck talks about combat veterans as audience for Thucydides (as they would presumably have been originally). Powerful emotional charge of retreat from Syracuse, survivors’ guilt etc.
I thought the intended audience, as a possession for all time, was supposed to be future leaders and students of history/war, much like Machiavelli’s audience two millennia later. A kind of analysis as to why poleis do what they do.
It’s a reasonable guess, but Thucydides leaves it open where Machiavelli tells us whom he’s writing for. It has been argued that it’s more specifically for his fellow Athenians who are showing signs of not learning from their defeat, and only secondarily for posterity.
