So getting up to speed on the McAlister case roiling San Franright now, and which is yet another example of the Willie Horton effect in full effect. One thing that immediately jumps out: how police unions screw with facts. Like claiming McAlister "did no prison time."

For those unfamiliar: McAlister killed two people on Dec 31 in a drunken hit and run (with other alleged offenses too). The controversy is that he could have been hit with a life sentence a few months earlier, so it's now the "one bad case." https://www.startribune.com/san-francisco-da-under-fire-after-pedestrians-killed/600007079/ …

IOW, Boudin is being criticized because someone spent more time locked up (in jail, but not prison, which... might be worse, really) than almost all ppl convicted of serious violence do in many European countries. But we didn't throw his life away, and that's the problem.

It's easy to write about the costs of not being harsh: we can point to a terrible crime, and it is easy to sensationalize. The costs of severity are always invisible to the broader public (tho not to the communities which bear those costs, which is why prog DAs keep winning).

How do you tell the story of the person who would NOT have done anything wrong again, but is rotting away in a CA prison? We can't even necessarily identify who that person is. But those costs are vast, and under-reported.

Anyway, this is a tale as old as the first prison. But that quote by the police union, that someone who did five yrs in jail "did no prison time" is a brilliant--tho disgusting--move. A good reminder--again--that the police are political actors and must be treated as such.pic.twitter.com/tiTZ0PMxHG

Do the flip-side.
@GeorgeGascon let McAllister sit jail for over 4 years in jail.@Chesaboudin as pub defender argued for a continuance of the preliminary hearing THREE years after McAllister was arrested. They're both complicit in their failed management.pic.twitter.com/6hzahQjlp4

And, the fact remains 5 yrs in jail/prison when you've committed your 4th robbery, with a gun no less, & been to prison 6 times, is insufficient. This is where decarceral ideology face-plants on the concrete.

I don’t think “fact” means what you think it means.

"Fact" used in the rhetoric sense to underscore the truth of my statement, so yes, I do know what its different meanings and usages are. Thank you for caring though.
