Star Wars was painted. Almost impossible to believe that most of the epic widescreen sci-fi images in the first 3 Star Wars films were done by 3 "Matte painting" artists. These are fake sets made with plexiglass and oil paint. Even the 100s of storm troopers were painted.pic.twitter.com/ifP4vtqTd8

Spoiler: Those epic images in the first 3 Star Wars films were hand-painted! Back then before CGI matte paintings were used. Matte paintings typically depict landscapes painted onto glass using oil, acrylics, or pastels, and are either filmed through or added in post productionpic.twitter.com/7HGmYJqwAM

Pt.3. More of those Star Wars Matte paintings, that I am reliably informed were painted on shower doors - because they were glass and the right dimensions for widescreen. Matte paintings create "the illusion of an environment that is not present at the filming location."pic.twitter.com/uJBgQ04bbH

pt.4. The amazing Hand-Painted Matte's from the Ewok forest moon of Endor in Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi. The acted action occurred in the black shapes and the majority of the epic views were paintings. Matte painting is an old cinema art - now superseded by CGIpic.twitter.com/TQiOPFM8kC

pt.5 Another amazing Film-Painting fact. James Cameron (director of Avatar) started out as matte painter & model maker. Here he is turning an abandoned field into a ruined dystopian New York cityscape for the Apocalyptic Sc-Fi movie "Escape from New York" (1981). Thanks @chappspic.twitter.com/72zjDt3E9Z

Pt.6 Star Wars - painted on Shower Doors? Truth or myth? Perhaps someone at @DisneyLucasFilm can confirm (or deny) that the fabulous rumour that the original matte paintings for the first 3 Star Wars film were painted onto shower doors? We love the art & the mythology behind itpic.twitter.com/sYmh7SbTyY

Pt.8 Stunning matte painting on ALIENS (1986) written and directed by James Cameron. Painting by Robert and Dennis Skotak. The painted Star Wars - if you look closely at the award ceremony at the end of STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE, you'll see that the rebels on the edges, left and right, and the ones in the distance were actually a painted matte, as was the entire background. Amazed?pic.twitter.com/oo6ZkJosW2

Hand-painted Storm-Troopers in CLOSE-UP, from the excellent video on Industrial Light and Magic, the geniuses behind the Star Wars Special Effects. As the man says "No-body knows it's a matte painting they just assume its a very large set." https://bit.ly/2urGHpp  Tx @Chappspic.twitter.com/NSlb03pWAF

Put all doubt to rest - here is The actual STAR WARS glass matte painting that proves that those stormtroopers in the first film were painted. These are from the storage area at Skywalker farm, where the glass mattes are kept. Many thanks to the intrepid @jeff_hockett for sharingpic.twitter.com/tnIlEAjQZ6

I was lucky enough to see some of these amazing matte paintings in person at the Lucasfilm archives at Skywalker Ranch several years ago. One of my favorites things I got to see there.

It’s more like a warehouse than a museum. The matte paintings were in the back in these sideways drawers that could slide out so you could see them.

I'm gobsmacked. So are they kept in the dark to preserve them, do you think? save them from perishing under light?

I assume so. I have some pictures of them at home that I could share with you, but right now I’m on a cruise ship somewhere of the coast of England. 😊

this is amazing and there's the very image that started this - the storm troopers. I can't believe they're being stored like this - could be in frames on a wall. Many many thanks.

I feel even older than usual. A perfectly legit dream job to pay the bills when I was in (art) school was move to LA, be a matte artist. And now it’s “almost impossible to believe” that anyone did that sort of work.
