That's how it sounds, at the very least a lot of graphics and code from the Super Donkey demo were reused for YI

Well that seems to work because in Super_Donkey you are able to grab platforms like Donkey Kong would in other games. Very early and considering the fact that a sound driver wasn't implemented and unplayable stages, the build was really an engine test.
