(1/2) Out running this morning on a new route and a lady runs past me. Despite only passing, when I get home @Strava automatically tags her in my run. If I click on her face it shows her full name, picture and a map of her running route (which effectively shows where she lives)pic.twitter.com/flnHpSvA79

(2/2) This is despite the fact that I don't follow her and she doesn't share her activity publicly. So basically if someone sees a woman running alone there's an app they can go to see her name, picture and address 🤯

UPDATE: @ntzm_ points out this is a separate privacy setting from when you change who can see your activities - all settings default to 'Everyone' but this feature will only be disabled if you turn off 'Flyby' https://twitter.com/ntzm_/status/1305532757129474051 …pic.twitter.com/OTheIVmW2O

Looking at the wording on the Flyby privacy setting, it's absolutely not clear that other people will be able to see your running route on a map (and all the info that comes along with that)pic.twitter.com/ztPJCb7ngm

This is what happens when the people making these decisions aren't people who have to worry about harassment

Worth remembering that someone knowing where you live isn't the only risk, it's not even the biggest risk. It's also knowing the route, knowing where you go that's dark or secluded and at what time, and that it is probably a regular routine

***UPDATE*** @Strava have now changed this setting to default to private - for anyone who had it set to 'Everyone' it is now set to private until you choose to enable it. Thank you for listening and taking this seriously Strava!https://twitter.com/Strava/status/1316017870090821632 …

As part of our ongoing commitment to privacy and safety, Flyby sharing will be default off unless athletes choose to change it.

Surely the default here should be opt-in rather than opt-out?

@followthelemur @julianhuppert @Strava I thought that, it's weird that Strava would have to make you opt-in for marketing communications but not for sharing your movements with strangers

Flyby’s are accessed through a different UI in browser, and are not available in the app AFAIK. I think this is coming from the group activity detection.

How could it be more clear? It says everyone on the web gets your in-depth activity playbacks.

Agreed, it should be disabled by default but is pretty explicit.

I’d also argue that you shouldn’t need to figure out a setting to not release that info, it should be something you have to work at to share surely?
