Probably because the RT audience score means nothing since anyone can leave a rating (whether they’ve seen the film or not) and since not everyone who sees a given movie makes the effort to go there to vote.

Yeah I don’t get the obsession over the audience scores since it’s been proven it can be manipulated
-
That's an interesting take BUT I'll go with this WEEKEND ESTIMATES 1.Venom $35,700,000 (2nd weekend) 2.A Star is Born $28,000,000 3.First Man $16,500,000 (1st weekend)
-
And those numbers are actually quantifiable.
-
Do we believe Cinemascore as more or less quantifiable? (I was not surprised to see “First Man” get a B+.)
-
Hard to say. But it's based strictly on opening-night audiences, which doesn't necessarily represent a cross-section of the film's audience in toto.
-
Critics will be critics and the audiences will speak for themselves. Anyway “Hey
@ADuralde when are you and the crew getting#whattheflick on#ApplePodcasts” Miss you all! -
Watch this space.

Venom is a fun romp and the definition of escapism. First Man is a serious study and deconstruction of American Exceptionalism. I think people are opting for escapism due to what’s going in America right now.

Because mainstream audiences want lazy and easily digestible rather than slow and thought-provoking. I wish there was a more complex answer than that, but there isn’t.
-
Or maybe Real Life is stressful enough (eg, politics, harassment, school shootings, crime, natural disasters, etc.) as is and some audiences wanted to escape?
-
Also pretentious people forget that film is both art AND entertainment and some people just want a fun movie that doesn't take itself too seriously. Other people enjoy the best of both worlds, inspite of ignorant generalizations.

Because Rotten Tomato critics have forgotten 1 damn important thing... FUN! & the Audience loved the movie. They also like Avatar Suicide Squad Harry Potter & an endlessly FREAKING IMPORTANT LIST But NO the critics just like being smarty-pants rejects that hear themselvespic.twitter.com/8m93xWGNpU

Prisoner of Azkaban has 90%+, Goblet 88%, Avatar 83%.... critic ratings Suicide Squad has 60% Audience rating... What the hell are you talking about? :D Also, critics are not a monolith, they are people who just happen to build a career around writing/talking about films.

& the early HP movies??? When it was trying to get off the ground? Or the Twilight series. Critics are often bullies grown up. I have seen some good ones on TM, but I'd rather go to Imdb first, even Wikipedia before TM.

Perhaps they didn’t like the portrayal of Armstrong as an emotionally distant, socially troubled human being, or in other words...

I mean thats what he was like. People don’t wanna accept something that isn’t exactly like what they hope in their head.
-
I didn’t even know what to expect, but I never knew how complicated of a person he was out of the spotlight. It made for a very compelling, emotionally investing experience for me. Many of the scenes with his family were more thrilling than the space-set sequences
