I rarely ghost people pitching me but I remember this editor asking for some muscle content so I proposed a story (abt Bob Paris, Sam Fussell, et al., later ran in the PR) about some issues related to masculinity and they wrote back "cool, so issues related to toxic masculinity"

Yeah it was a good one, nigh-samizdat after it dropped but has gained steam in the post-grantland of essays about everything

I feel like no one who is as good as writer as he was has really been willing to “do the work,” a sort of George Plimpton on steroids, and no one who has done the work has been as good a writer as he was. Present company aside, of course.

He really did do the essential labor, and it shows. That book perhaps biased me in favor of analysis -- not always, but def when related to my own interests -- done by people who did those activities not necessarily at the highest level but who were at least There for It
