Littlefield writes that an executive’s job is to “deliver the show the network thinks it bought.” With the successful shows I’ve been on the showrunner gave the network exactly what thought they bought. The unsuccessful ones tried to make it something other than the execs wanted.

This isn’t to say that you can’t follow your creative vision but if you sell “funny cop show” or “female-driven stoner comedy” or whatever, that had better be what you deliver.
