I think it reveals a fundamental difference b/w the US and most other countries (esp in Asia) - the US has an underlying complete obsession with individual liberty/freedoms whereas other countries, again esp in Asia, have a stronger communitarian ethos.
i admire the men i have known who would eat directly over a clogged toilet while unclogging it, but they are not the sort of men who like to wear masks or even wear closed-toe shoes while operating motorized augers
it's fine to admire this, but a pandemic will only be handled well if there is a strong enough communitarian ethos that people understand that sacrifices of personal liberty have to be made when faced with crisis... libertarianism is incompatible with good crisis response.
