The typical scenario is: a leftist appears to advocate eg killing whites or men. This triggers right wing outrage, less at the statement itself than at a double standard: why are they allowed to do this if we’re not? The cancelation campaign is framed as a pursuit of fairness./2

This creates an incentive for the sort of leftist who doesn’t mind weathering harassment to make the sort of statements that attract right wing outrage. After all, being the noble victim of an ignorant mob can provide a career boost (many on the right and center do this too)./3
