We’d also be spared copious “masking as culture” essays, since this is now and forever after a political issue, unlike how it is treated in parts of Asia (a health/safety behavior tied to various other behaviors). But that ship has sailed here

One side will go hard on the mask use well beyond their limited utility, bc it is also reflective of the nature of the society they’re hoping to engineer, and the other will resist angrily, as they resist all such directives(often in ways that make them fodder for online “dunks”)

Absolutely. The current figurehead’s efforts to turn public safety measures into a culture war is complete malpractice.

It is really fascinating. The entire US covid response is influenced by culture war positioning (you can't get it from X thing which is good to us/our party, but you can get it from Y activity)

The reasons for advising against masks still aren’t clear, especially in light of the harm masks could have prevented.

It's fascinating. Also the cloth mask supply is/can be vast. Only filtered masks were limited in stock at the time that guideline went out. Also, we've really not had any good reporting on the ins and outs of that original order
