One of the saddest media-related things I can imagine is being one of those people who always fires off or agrees with the Approved Takes, and yet still lacks a following or even a part-time job in the "biz." They're doing the work, but for nothing. It's fascinating
They all wait and study the tweets, hoping they can score with a "safe" dunk ("this ain't it, chief") from Chait, A Sullivan, Matty Ice Yglesias, Katie Herzog, @tereseaimee, or someone else on the "approved to abuse for laffs/clout" list. They'll even steal each other's dunks
But me? I don't care. I work in the media, but only as a sideline to everything else I do. Fighting with the "kids" over trivial clout stuff, scoring with "slams"...if the previous round of New Left personality-driven schisms were farce, this is beyond parody. It's the Work
Most normal people just use social media this way, if they see a report piece they like for whatever reason they'll share it for their friends... It's if you're doing to make a political point that it's harder to understand I guess. Most Normies aren't "operatives" in any way.
