Oh, there are "grifts" out there, such as using your nonprofit to launder a million bucks in contributor money, etc. But this same term is frequently applied to someone who gets $500 for a thumbsucking wet fart of an opinion piece in the Atlantic
The first one is surely a phony, but the second one...who can say, absent more information? A lot of folks mean well, even if they mean nothing, and they're trying to share what they believe are the "correct thoughts," although they're incapable of thinking them on their own

I think thinking #1 and #2 gives them too much credit. Many literally know nothing, in the sense that knowing takes rigor, and they just want to shape insipid, sophomoric product that will help be liked, accepted, or move up the ladder. Workplace politics in public, almost.
