Tom of Finland is a bitter fruit of that physique photography and physical culture tree. Back when I was a history prof, I'd do a lecture entirely of 20s/30s erotic physique pics, then Tom of Finland, then just actual (male only) erotic cinema. Students thought I was far right!
I think I'm the only professor who gave such lectures over and over and not only didn't end up on one of those "professor watch lists" but in fact found myself considered among the most conservative profs at the university, somehow
