the last time JK Rowling was trending bigly, I remember chagrined Kids firing off takes like "I hate her but will always love HP" which became takes about how "the author is dead" and HP is thus owned by all and finally someone ended up selling dustcovers with personalized names

how much must you love this mediocre thing to go through all these gymnastics to justify your love of such a run of the mill text? and yet: this is the way of all takes, the cognitive dissonance of the takes. We Can Do Both. "Yes And," Not "No But" or "Well Actually?"

the point, of course, isn't that you shouldn't read authors whose views you don't agree with -- you should -- but rather that it's fascinating to see people agonizing so much over this particular series, which could be replaced in your "canon" with literally any other YA series

Slightly different, but I struggle with this in regards to WWE. I've been a wrestling fan since 3rd grade (34 now) but the more I learn about VKM and how he treats others, the harder it is to stay engaged. I realize I could switch to other feds, but hasn't happened.

I view them as product I consume and critique for work, and mainly watch other feds, but the history of wrestling itself is a history of intense exploitationhttps://www.jacobinmag.com/2014/08/money-in-the-bank/ …

At least with wrestling there are multiple personalities you can follow...with Rowling, it's all the fruit of her mental labor!
