the last time JK Rowling was trending bigly, I remember chagrined Kids firing off takes like "I hate her but will always love HP" which became takes about how "the author is dead" and HP is thus owned by all and finally someone ended up selling dustcovers with personalized names

the point, of course, isn't that you shouldn't read authors whose views you don't agree with -- you should -- but rather that it's fascinating to see people agonizing so much over this particular series, which could be replaced in your "canon" with literally any other YA series

People need to have real world communities to engage with. In a fandom, you can find a niche of people who feel the same way you do and encounter very little friction. Real life is not like that, but it's also much more fulfilling
