I've never liked the "grifter" identifier because it's a way to ignore what people are actually saying and instead focus on how they're a fraud or driven purely by financial means. The upside to that is you don't have to address the substance of the issue.

I get that people can be cynically motivated by money and have that drive their politics. But you can apply this to literally every journalist or online media personality! Which ones get that treatment seems to boil down to who you do/don't agree with.

I agree. I never use the term and always caution against its use. It also makes everyone seem like an individual bad actor in what is instead a flawed marketplace of ideas structured around perverse incentives
