🎩🎩🎩 AT needs to pipe down & let the guests talk. Mustache club turns out to be a great host...something tense & wired in his voice hearkens back to the days when sliderule/uptight/Bob Haldeman type white guys had some balls. Nerdy without NPR nasality & uptalk. 👍 https://twitter.com/whatisleftpod/status/1265348520954875904 …

Years of doing virtual trainings over Zoom and years of 200 student lectures before that. The work @refucktionist

How does NPR train hosts to have vocal fry? Uptalk? Speech classes generally train people to not have it. An interesting mystery.

I’m sure it’s practiced/affected in some cases — @tereseaimee cited D Denvir as an example. But yes, when I did speech and legal forensics and then later taught those courses, I was trained in/trained students in speaking as slowly as possible, from the diaphragm, etc.

Question is more why that tonality is so prevalent among bluechecks, lanyards, quangocrats & other assorted credentialed mugwumps.

I believe it puts them at ease...it’s the elite voice for the age. A smooth sound budding tastemakers strive to emulate. Fascinating for sure

NPR voice is definitely a thing. Everyone notices it/ It used to be rude in come circles to notice it or point it out. So I was told.

Have a world-weary tone punctuated by earnest Gee Whiz inquisitiveness. End all statements sounding as if asking a question. Never closing/ Assume the audience knows rare knowledge (ex: a leader of Moldova) but then take pains to explain basic facts everyone actually knows.

She had an unintentionally hilarious interview with Bill O'Reilly once. Pretty sure she didn't do the reading though.

O'Reilly sounded completely out of place on NPR. Just the LI accent was enough. He should have come prepared with a list of his favorite Balkan poets, top Mole recipes, predictions for upcoming Booker prizes etc
