How does NPR train hosts to have vocal fry? Uptalk? Speech classes generally train people to not have it. An interesting mystery.
I’m sure it’s practiced/affected in some cases — @tereseaimee cited D Denvir as an example. But yes, when I did speech and legal forensics and then later taught those courses, I was trained in/trained students in speaking as slowly as possible, from the diaphragm, etc.
I even went through speech therapy to beat a stutter that stayed beat, unlike Biden’s (I speak from a Place of Authority on this). But the long and short of it is that the Ira Glass voice is almost like the lisp that did the work in siglo del oro Spain

Question is more why that tonality is so prevalent among bluechecks, lanyards, quangocrats & other assorted credentialed mugwumps.
I believe it puts them at ease...it’s the elite voice for the age. A smooth sound budding tastemakers strive to emulate. Fascinating for sure
