"Prof X has this under control, they're doing the essential work" is great if the book is $70 and the articles are paywalled/unreadable. It's a more subtle strat than demanding you "phonebank" or "organize" as far as doing the work goes(they dont even need to have read the stuff)
Telling people to do the work that they don't actually do themselves and that the essential worker isn't even doing is the tea. I've encountered every variation on this, and I've done all the work they demand we do...this is by far the best way to reply
The performance of actually ethical behaviour requires rigorous training that can only be obtained through exhausting & expensive study at the Right Grad Seminars (tm); just action & thought will always be expensive luxury commodities
